Job Description:

The Sr Editor (SrE) represents the Editorial Department in internal meetings, including status meetings and kickoffs. The SrE reviews and provides feedback on Creative Briefs, Estimates, and Timelines to ensure Editorial needs are reflected and that the department is set up for success. The SrE manages assigned account(s) to ensure workloads are assigned appropriately and prioritizes projects—problem solving with Project Management as required. The SrE manages launches with minimal supervision. The SrE adheres to processes set forth for Editorial reads and utilizes checklists developed for each type of Editorial read. He/she ensures Client, Brand, and AMA style adherence, that FDA guidelines are applied, that Agency processes are followed, that inconsistencies in campaigns are flagged, and that timelines are met.

The SrE mentors new hires on pharmaceutical advertising mandates, client and agency processes, brand knowledge, team roles and responsibilities, and Editorial responsibilities as appropriate to their experience and knowledge.

Primary Responsibilities/Oversight:

  • Develop a knowledge of the brand and strategy for each of the products assigned
  • Clearly interpret and communicate client and Medical/Legal/Regulatory requests
  • Contribute to the development of training modules in eRouting best practices, permissions, and client submission processes
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while communicating and collaborating with team members and keeping them abreast of any significant timing, fact checking, or editorial issues
  • Consistently update supervisor with account information including workload, timing, and other issues
  • Edit and fact-check copy according to Client, Brand, and AMA style
  • Review the work of other Editors to ensure account style is followed and comments are appropriate
  • Build and maintain working relationships with Copywriters and all team members to establish a preferred way of working
  • Attend assigned account status and kick-off meetings to represent editorial interests and negotiate on behalf of the department
  • Update, maintain, and share the Editorial Style Guide and Master Citation List with Copy and Account
  • Utilize the Editorial and Fact-Check Checklists and perform specific types of reads at the required stages in the life cycle of every project
  • Fact-check all claims of each project for accuracy and ensure citations are styled correctly—as reflected in the Master Citation List
  • Perform consistency checks when required, verifying that the language and artwork of derivative pieces are consistent with core piece
  • Support other editors when they have a heavy workload and participate in a rotating departmental nightly and weekend schedule

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Project a professional, positive attitude toward all Agency employees and Clients—remaining calm in highpressure situations and completing tasks (including reviews/feedback) in a timely manner
  • Support the Operations/Editorial Director as an Agency resource for problem solving and mentoring less experienced staff
  • Demonstrate the ability to set priorities and handle multiple projects and accounts
  • Communicate clearly—verbally and in writing
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of assigned accounts and of the Client’s process/procedures for all submissions
  • Uphold Agency quality standards in servicing the Client
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by the Operations/Editorial Director
  • Maintain accurate time sheets on a daily basis and submit per Agency requirement

Qualifications:

  • College degree—preferably English, Journalism, or Communications major
  • 3 to 5 years of editing experience in a pharmaceutical advertising agency or a medical publishing house
  • Superior editing skills and knowledge of AMA style
  • Knowledge of and interest in the health care industry and the science of pharmaceuticals
  • Must be detail oriented and organized
  • Must possess a high level of language and communication skills
  • Must have an excellent grasp of grammar
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Acrobat and MS Office
  • Must project a positive/helpful attitude
  • Must be able to follow instructions and adhere to strict guidelines while having the ability to enforce the same with direct reports
