Senior Medical Writer, Medical and Scientific Affairs

Job Description:
The Senior Medical Writer, Medical and Scientific Affairs (MSA) is primarily responsible for leading and supporting the creation, of scientific content, including medical affairs/communications and publication deliverables, and providing strategic input for brand/ publication planning and competitive intelligence with a primary focus in oncology, hematology, and rare disease. This position is also responsible for being a scientific lead on various accounts while working with internal members of multiple project teams to produce a range of scientific content and materials that satisfy the needs of our clients. The Senior Medical Writer will work very closely with leadership to steer scientific strategy for assigned initiatives but is able to support the development of content without manager support.
Education/Background Required:
- PhD in a relevant field (biological life sciences, oncology, biomedical research, etc) or PharmD
- 4-7 years of experience in the medical communications industry or equivalent experience
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of scientific content (slide decks, publications, abstracts, meeting summaries, HCP biographies, disease state or drug backgrounders, etc)
- Proofread and annotate editorial work to comply with in-house, client, and/or American Medical Association (AMA) style guides
- Research and source appropriate medical literature for scientifically rigorous materials and content
- Continually monitor press releases and new publications for relevant client and competitor data
- Summarize data into tables, PowerPoint slides, and reports
- Establish and maintain target dates for assignment completion. Communicate as appropriate when timelines are threatened
- Learn and implement Veeva and Medical, Legal, and Regulatory (MLR) submission and review processes as assigned
- Incorporate feedback from internal colleagues, clients, faculty, and journal reviewers for content and materials to improve accuracy, style, content, and focus
- Identify when permissions requirements for items that may use publications or NCCN content
- Train and mentor junior medical writers as needed
- Knowledge and experience working with various medical multidisciplinary team members (nurses, pharmacists, surgeons, radiologists, transplanters, etc)
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of assigned brand(s), therapeutic area(s), and competitive environment
- Recommend and implement strategic and non-traditional programming solutions (internally and to clients)
- Support client work by traveling to live events and meetings as necessary (approximately 5-10%)
Required Skills:
- Excellent verbal and presentation skills; reliable communicator
- Demonstrate ability and willingness to assume a leadership/mentor role within the team
- Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness in content development
- Able to monitor their own work to ensure quality as well as receiving and implementing feedback from internal and client sources, faculty, MLR reviewers, and journal reviewers
- Completes work in a timely manner
- Able to summarize complex or diverse information for a variety of audiences (HCPs, patients, payers, etc)
- Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; meets challenges with resourcefulness
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines with minimal supervision
